The article summarizes the master’s thesis on the History of the Church (Marianna Saltini and her work in the dioceses of Modena and Carpi in the first fifty years of the twentieth century) presented at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bologna in March 2009. The main source is the Positio of the process of beatification. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints has recognized on April 23rd, 2002 the «heroic virtues» of father Zeno’s sister affirming that «Mother Nina», widowed at the age of forty, left her children in safe hands to devote herself completely to the abandoned little girls of Carpi. She founded the House of the Divine Providence and, later on, the Institute of the Daughters of Saint Francis». This abstract leaves out the chapters where Marianna’s figure and work are considered as a part of the wider social commitment of Carpi’s Church, describing the difficult religious life of that time through the figures of the bishops of Carpi in the first half of last century.
